Position: Graduate Control Systems Engineer

Location: Huddersfield

Job Overview

We are seeking a motivated Graduate Control Systems Engineer to join our comprehensive 3-year development program. This role offers hands-on experience across all aspects of control systems engineering, from electrical panel assembly, wiring and electrical testing to advanced software development and testing. The successful candidate will progress through structured rotations while contributing to real-world industrial automation projects.

Key Responsibilities

Year 1: Foundation & Hands-On Skills

Electrical Panel Wiring & Assembly

  • Assemble and wire motor control centres, switchgear, and distribution panels according to detailed schematic and General Arrangements

Panel Testing & Commissioning

  • Execute Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)
  • Perform continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, and functional verification
  • Commission control systems on-site with customer involvement
  • Document test results and create as-built drawings
  • Troubleshoot electrical faults and system malfunctions and report and rectify your findings

Year 2: Software Development & Integration

Control System Programming

  • Creation and testing of PLC and HMI/SCADA software applications primarily using Siemens / Allen Bradley/Rockwell products. Network design and implementation of industry standard protocols including MODBUS and OPC
  • Program Variable Speed Drives (VSD) drives
  • Implement safety systems and SIL-rated logic
  • Design communication networks using Ethernet/IP, Profibus, and Modbus protocols
  • Client Interaction
  • Document Control
  • Document creation, Functional Design Specification (FDS), Control philosophy
  • Document Sign off, Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), Site Acceptance Test (SAT)

Year 3: Advanced Technologies & Specialisation

Advanced System Development

  • Work on complex automation projects with minimal supervision
  • Support project teams with technical knowledge and problem-solving
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on system architecture and design decisions
  • Electrical Testing
  • Participate in customer meetings and technical discussions
  • Client Interaction
  • Document Control
  • Document creation, FDS, Control philosophy
  • Document Sign off, FAT, SAT

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related field
  • Strong understanding of electrical fundamentals and circuit analysis
  • Knowledge of PLC programming concepts and industrial communication protocols
  • Familiarity with electrical drafting software and engineering design principles
  • Understanding of process control theory and instrumentation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Willingness to travel for project commissioning and customer support
  • Full UK Driving Licence
