Position: Mechanical Fitter

Location: Huddersfield

Hours: Monday - Friday, 08:00 - 16:30

Salary: £32,000

 

Job Overview

This position combines multiple skilled trade disciplines including mechanical fitting, welding, pipe fitting, and metal fabrication. The ideal candidate will be a versatile tradesperson capable of working across these complementary specialties.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Fitting

  • Install, Service and repair industrial machinery and mechanical equipment mostly within the combustion industry
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings and specifications
  • Align, fit, and assemble component parts using hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments
  • Perform preventive maintenance and service on mechanical systems

Welding

  • Perform various types of welding including MIG, TIG, and stick welding (Ideally coded welding)
  • Join metal components according to specifications
  • Interpret welding symbols and drawings
  • Follow proper welding procedures and quality standards

Pipe Fitting

  • Install, repair, and maintain piping systems
  • Read and interpret piping diagrams and isometric drawings
  • Calculate pipe measurements and mark cutting points
  • Thread, bend, and fabricate pipes to specifications
  • Test pipe systems for leaks and proper operation
  • Gas Safe Qualified
  • Install valves, fittings, and other piping components

Fabrication

  • Create metal products from raw materials according to drawings
  • Measure and mark materials for cutting and assembly
  • Build structures and components to precise specifications
  • Perform quality control checks on fabricated items

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Completed apprenticeship or equivalent experience in at least one of the listed trades (Fabrication, Pipe Fitting, Welding, Mechanical Fitting)
  • Valid trade certification/license as required by local regulations
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in industrial or commercial settings
  • Proficient in reading technical drawings and specifications
  • Strong mathematical and spatial reasoning skills
  • Multiple trade qualifications or cross-training experience
  • Knowledge of relevant safety codes and standards
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Commitment to workplace safety and quality standards

Physical Requirements

  • Stand, walk, and work in various positions for extended periods
  • Lift and carry heavy materials and equipment
  • Work in confined spaces when required
  • Operate power tools and equipment safely
  • Work in various environmental conditions
  • Wear appropriate PPE as required

Work Environment

  • Industrial/manufacturing setting
  • Exposure to noise, heat, and various weather conditions
  • May involve shift work, overtime and working away from home.
  • Must follow strict safety protocols and procedures
  • May require travel to different work sites

  • Properly use and maintain personal protective equipment

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid trade certification in relevant discipline(s)
  • Current welding certifications as required (Ideally coded welding)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Forklift certification (preferred)
  • First aid certification (preferred)
